A financial donation to build a women's maternity ward in Bwindi Uganda. The goals of the project are to:
- double the amount of births local women can have at the clinic (from 45 to 100 per month)
- significantly reduce the mother mortality rate (currently 1/200)
- dramatically reduce HIV transmission to infants (currently HIV mother deliveries NOT in the clinic will have a 30% transmit rate to infants--this goes down to less than 1% in the clinic)
- give the children a better chance at a long life in this harsh environment
The education (HIV & social) will go along way to improving the lives of women in that community (they are currently 3rd class citizens and subject to all sorts of horrible male dominance). For more information you can check out the website at http://www.bchc.ug.
